Striving for Excellence at Adisadel College: Achievements, The 2010 Centenary Celebrations and Issues of Alumni-Alma Mater Relations

| Dr. Ebo Richardson (Quaque, ’65) revises, adapts and expands a portion of his previous personal anecdotal material on academic excellence at Adisadel College. He also provides his own, unofficial, eye witness account on scenes, personalities and key activities of the centenary week (July 12-18, 2010) in Cape Coast. He then describes and reflects on what the centenary celebration’s planning and execution might tell us about the nature and quality of the ‘bond’ between Santaclausians and their Alma Mater. Here below, a few short excerpts from the paper.

“Great and distinguished academic institutions are known and defined by two attributes: 1)The School’s outstanding human and material resources, most notably its teachers , and 2)The quality of its Alumni and the bond that exists between the Alumni and the School.”

“The author encountered many 1960s Santaclausians in Cape Coast during the Centenary week (July 12-18) at Adisadel. They were there to provide a strong visual, vocal, moral and material support to Adisadel. Above all, they had come to support the extremely important national mission of educating the citizens of Ghana. The Centenary Celebration was, first and foremost, a salute to the triumph of education, and to Adisadel as one important piece in the educational puzzle in Ghana! “

At the Wednesday evening’s Gospel Night:

“Soon, a long and meandering line of Santaclausian dancers, some in their 70s, 60s, 50s, 40s, and 30s, were energetically dancing their way majestically and beautifully in a perfectly choreographed manner. The younger crowd was ecstatic. The Choir and musicians performing on stage were electrified. The “ancient and old” Santaclausians were amazed at themselves…. And a good time was had by all!”

“ A specially commissioned Adisadel centenary cloth had been printed for sale. As a result, there was a particularly remarkable and very moving atmosphere at the Sunday morning’s Centenary Church Service. Santaclausians, spouses, parents, children, siblings, friends…. many were looking quite resplendent in their Adisadel Centenary clothing (Men’s’ full length cloths, Women’s kaba and skirt, Agbadas and Joromi shirts, men’s shirts, all cut from the Adisadel centenary cloth!). “

Link: Read the full paper (pdf format)

Full text of the Centenary Keynote Speech by Sir Sam Jonah

I am humbled and honoured to be here today presenting the Keynote Address on this very special occasion. I must confess to feeling intimidated in the presence of His Excellency, the President of Ghana, John Evans Atta Mills and other distinguished guests including my former teachers and old Santaclausians who knew me in my original raw state, shorn of all the after-school accretions. There are countless others who fit the bill of keynote speaker better.

Naturally, I have asked myself what I could have done wrong to be saddled with this burden. Naturally also, the story of the biblical Jonah and the Whale comes to mind - somebody to be sacrificed; and who deserves to be thrown to the waves more than a contemporary Jonah?

One hundred years ago, when the SPG founded this school, their modest ambition was, in part, to educate the youth for the Anglican Christian Ministry. True to this goal, the school, which later moved to this location and became known as Adisadel College, has produced countless priests and bishops. But beyond personnel for the Christian ministry, the roll call of products of the school in other areas of both national and international endeavours will take hours to read. Suffice it to mention here the following...

Link: Read More

Centenary Week in Pictures

Cape Coast, Ghana, Monday 19th July 2010 - The scene and atmosphere in Cape Coast over the last week (12 - 18 July) and especially at Adisadel College was something that could be described as a historic centenary celebration, bringing together over 3,000 Santaclausians from around the globe. The Adisco campus was "painted" in the traditional black and white colours of the school as both current students and Old Boys (also known as Santaclausians) took part in a week long celebration of a school started on 4th. January 1910 called the School for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG Grammar School).

This was an event that should not have been missed by any 'Santa'. Old Boys from the 1940s to the youngest ones who graduated in 2009 were at hand to grace the occasion. Classmates and housemates who have not seen each other in decades, revived old friendships and old tales - from their experiences as 'homos', seniors punishing juniors for minor issues, sports, classwork, experiences in the dinning hall, assemblies at the Canterbury Hall, voting for school prefects, picking up prizes at Speech Days, the bright ones, students who entered Form One as 'fathers', etc, etc, etc. Words are just not enough to describe the centenary experience...we are however, delighted to share with you pictures, videos and sound bites from the week of celebrations....

Link to Centenary Photos

Cape Coast, July 19, GNA - The Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Dr Sam Jonah, on Saturday disclosed that as compared to Singapore's 100 per cent and Malaysia's 14.7 per cent, only 1.4 per cent of schools in Ghana had access to Information, Communication and Technology (ICT).

He therefore called for massive investment into ICT in the country's educational sector to help accelerate the nation's development process, calling on students to take the study of ICT seriously as it was a determining factor in the current job market.

Adisadel Old Boys Website - www.AdisadelOnline.Net

Fellow Santaclausians,

The AOBA website has been re-launched with a slight difference in the domain name. It is now www.adisadelonline.net. Please make changes to your bookmarks. This cause of action became necessary as a result of problems we have had in the past few days. We appear to have invited unwanted attention from unsavory characters but this is a minor set-back that we are overcoming and it is our hope that it will not disrupt the plans we have for the Centenary Week as far as online access is concerned. Steps have been taken to prevent a recurrence of website unavailability and we do look forward to your support to enable us provide this essential service to the alumni family.

Please take note of the following URLs for the latest on the centenary and information on Adisadel.

Schools Website: www.AdisadelCollege.net

Old boys Website: www.AdisadelOnline.net

Centenary Page: www.adisadelcollege.net/centenary.htm

Floreat Adisadel!

AOBA - Web team

(AFI) of the United States was established in 2003 for the purposes of promoting the welfare of Adisadel College and helping the school achieve its educational mission. It is an IRS-approved non-profit organization set up under section 501 (c) (3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. Thus any donations made to the Foundation by U.S. tax payers are tax deductible.

The Foundation works with other Santaclausians organizations such as year groups and old boys associations to raise money and in-kind donations for the school. The funds go towards capital improvements, infrastructure repairs, teaching incentives, and other expenditures that help improve the quality of the educational experience at the school.

In its July 2010 report released before Centenary celebrations in July, AFI provides cumulative information on donations, projects that have been funded to-date, and its financial balance.

Link: AFI July 2010 Report

Adisadel Foundation Inc., (AFI)
P.O.
Poem: Father of Our Alma Mater

FATHER OF OUR ALMA MATER

Fathers Day cometh
But once every year.
So this centennial year,
And for centuries yonder,
Santaclausians every where,
Appreciate Nathaniel Hamlyn;
A yeoman’s job indeed he did,
Father of our Alma Mater,
Adisadel On The Hill!

By: Albert O. Ebo Richardson, Ph.D.
Quaque House, 1965

The above poem, presented as an Adisadel Centenary “Father's Day” poem, and written on ‘Fathers Day’ weekend, June 19, 2010, honors The Rev. Nathaniel Temple Hamlyn, Founding Father of Adisadel College, Cape Coast . The occasion is the year-long, 2010, Adisadel Centenary celebration.

The poem is dedicated to the late Ben Kofi Akumanyi (Quaque House, Class of 1965), who sadly passed away in 2009, and to the whole Adisadel Class of 1965.

By presenting a poem as part of the centenary celebration, I am attempting to evoke Ben Akumanyi’s love and passion for the spoken word, and for all things literary.

From his early years at Adisadel College in 1960, Kofi Akumanyi developed an enviable mastery of the English language, and after graduating from University of Ghana , Legon, went on to have a tremendously successful career as a Journalist in Ghana, and in later years, in Great Britain. May his soul rest in peace.

Centenary Anthem Released

Toronto, Canada - Sunday June 13, 2010. The Centenary Anthem has been released. The anthem is written and performed by Ricky Telfer (Hamlyn, 1965). All Santaclausians are expected to learn how to sing it in preparation for the Centenary. We would like to encourage all Old Boys to listen to the song and practice singing it. A piece of advice - eating bananas do 'oil' the throat and it helps with the high pitches....

Below are the lyrics and sound track:

Adisadel Centenary Anthem

Adisadel College, you're a century old
We tip our hats to you
We your sons unite,
Celebrate all night
And to thank the Lord above
He has aided you
To have come this far
Do go on for years to come
Santaclausians, rise up
Show your pride.
Adisadel forevermore.

We will beat the drum
Sing songs of joy
As we dance and jubilate
We'll keep praying for God's helping hand
On all who pass through your gates.

He has aided you
To have come this far
Do go on for years to come
Santaclausians, rise up
Show your pride.
Adisadel forevermore.

[Please click on "Play" button to listen]

Botswana: Professor Bentil is Lesedi

Palapye — Stereotypes come and go, but the one about Palapye and sharing beats them all. People in Palapye are said to share everything, including even a can of beer. It appears Professor Kweku Bentil, the founding head of the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) in Palapye, is being baptized into the spirit of sharing that prevails here.

Professor Bentil (a Santaclausian - Aglionby, '64-'66) has been christened Lesedi, a beautiful name that translates into "Light" or "Beacon", and it is possible he is going to meet a lot of Lesedis in the streets of Palapye.

Kgosi Klaas Motshidisi says a meeting was called at the kgoatla at which the tribe suggested Setswana names for the professor.

"They ended up settling for Lesedi," Motshidisi says. "People had suggested many other names, but we settled for Lesedi. It is a beautiful name, more so because this is the man that has been tasked with bringing education to Botswana."

Centenary Music CD Project - Appeal for Funds

Fellow Santaclausians - I want to share with you the details on the Centenary CD which we are producing. Naturally, the CD will feature "traditional standards" like the School Ode and Adisadel on the Hill, done in both choral and contemporary styles. In addition there will be compositions commemorating the centenary to be performed by Adisadel musicians including several contemporary "Hiplife" artists (better known to the younger generation), Koo Nimo, Ricky Telfer and Glenn Warren. For those of you who are highlife purists, the great highlife singer Pat Thomas will be performing a Centenary Highlife which he has written and donated to Adisadel. The new Adisadel Jazz Band and the school Choir will also be featured on the CD. In all, we expect to record about 14 new tracks. We intend to have a double CD nicely packaged with both Old and New songs.

Attached is an article (Centenary CD Album) that appeared in the Daily Graphic on Sunday 6th February 2010 on the Centenary Album. Like all the other centenary activities, this activity also requires financing. We anticipate that our costs will be recovered through CD sales. In fact we expect this double CD album to recover its cost and generate significant cash flow for Adisadel College during the centenary and beyond.

We are appealing to Santaclausians to contribute generously towards the CD project. Interested contributors are invited to make a pledge. I will collect the pledges and do the needed follow up. But as they made their way to the School On A Hill, their lives were transformed. On the Hill, from East to West they shared one Chapel, they shared the same classroom blocks and they shared one dinning hall. They studied the same time (Prep), they slept the same time (Night out) and woke up the same time (Rising Bell). They took on responsibilities from Protocol Prefect, House Prefect to General Supervisor. Extra-curriculum activities were from Cadet, Drama Club, Writer and Debaters Club and Scripture Union.....

Book Review: Adisadel on The Hill - The Story

Mr. Kojo Yankah (President of the African University College of Communications) reviews the latest book on Adisadel College titled Adisadel On the Hill - The Story written by Rev. Cannon Pobee for Adisadel's centenary anniversary (1910-2010). The book was published and launched in March this year.

The book is 230 pages long, spanning 16 chapters, with 13 pages illustrated with both familiar and unfamiliar pictures. The Foreword is written by Justice Akrofi, the Archbishop and Primate of the Church of the Province of West Africa; and the Preface is by the author himself. Guided by part of the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, (8-9), and being a theologian himself, well brought up by Adisadel College, John S. Pobee, does not depart from the assignment given him by the management Board of Adisadel, i.e. to write an official history of Adisadel College – the Story. He admonished himself rather quickly with the biblical guidance: all things may be lawful, but not all things are expedient.

The book is available for sale at the Adisadel College Secretariat in Accra, Ghana.
Are we (as Santaclausians) ready for a Centenary?

His concern is based on recent pictures received from the school on the state of the houses and dormitories. The pictures show the state of Knight House. Information received on some of the other houses including Ebiradze tell the same story. You can view some of the pictures by clicking on the picture.

MP for Assin North threatens MCE

The Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency, Kennedy Agyapong (a Santaclausian), has threatened to kill the MCE of his area Alex Antwi Bosumtwi. He said his reasons to eliminate the MCE stems from the fact that he has evidence that the MCE want to assassinate him. Hon. Agyapong said although a formal report has been lodged to the police, he will not hesitate to kill the MCE before the MCE dares him.

He told Citi News in an interview that prior to this incident he had no issues with the MCE. However in recent times he was informed that the MCE had been maligning him and also plotting to assassinate him. “Well if he has planned to kill me, I will kill him first, I repeat I will kill him first. I have the evidence on tape…the chief hinted me that there was a problem but they didn’t tell me he had made such a serious statement that if I go there and they beat me to death he doesn’t care.”

Delta Air Lines Updates Accra-to-Atlanta Flight Times

ACCRA, March 29, 2010 – Delta Air Lines has revised the schedules for its new flights between Accra’s Kotoka International Airport and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to offer customers improved flight connections to destinations across the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. The revised schedules will increase by seven percent the number of same-day onward flight connections available to customers flying from Accra to Atlanta when the new flight launches on 3 June. This may be interesting news for Santaclausians making plans to travel to Ghana from North America for the Adisadel Centenary celebration in July.

Centenary Travel: Chartered flight arrangements from the UK

There have been very few enquiries from interested Santaclausians about the chartered flight to the centenary celebration in July. Although people have expressed interest, there have not been enough people commiting themselves to the flight. We think it is a good opportunity not only to travel together as a group but also to get a good deal for a flight in July. We need interested people to register now, give their flight dates and pay a deposit of £150.00 so we can get some estimates of how many people intend to actually travel in July. If we do not get a good number of people within the next few weeks, unfortunately we would have to cancel the deal which would be a missed opportunity; but obviously, there is no point organising something when people are simply not interested.

The number to call is: 0208 676 1919

Price details: £475.00 - Ghana International Arilines Travel

Dates - 1st - 31st July

Proposed group departure dates: Depart 8th July - Return flexible (anytime in July)

Thanks Nana Bamfo Santa '84

Feature Article: Better Late

The Akans have a saying that, ‘Akyea na emmui, ahomka wom’, meaning it is bent, but not broken gives hope. That is exactly our situation now in the midst of a myriad of complaints across the length and breadth of the country by members of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) on new admissions for the next academic year. The lead story of the Daily Graphic last Monday indicated that the Ministry of Education had called for calm with an assurance that consultants had been engaged to see how best to resolve the problem of classrooms affecting schools. So far, it is only the headmaster of the Adisadel College who has given an assurance that his school is ready for admissions.

Let Us Rescue Achimota School

A NATIONAL ASSET - STATEMENT DELIVERED ON THE FLOOR OF PARLIAMENT BY HON. PROF. MIKE OQUAYE – MP FOR DOME-KWABENYA & 2ND DEPUTY SPEAKER OF PARLIAMENT

Madam Speaker, one most disturbing news in Ghana today, is what some Ghanaians are doing to a vital national heritage – Achimota School. Following the publication on page three of the Daily Graphic (Friday 29 January, 2010), I visited the school out of a national concern. I met with the Head and Assistant Head I. May I point it out early that I am not an old Achimotan but a proud Presecan. But if any serious Ghanaian sits unconcerned when Achimota is bleeding, then God indeed help us all.

Achimota School was the baby of the great Governor Guggisberg. At a time when cocoa had revolutionarised the Gold Coast economy, we were twice blessed to have a Governor whose pre-occupation was development. In those days, most Governors were liberal arts graduates. The difference was that Guggisberg was a surveyor by training. He personally surveyed and mapped out Korle Bu Hospital Land and Achimota School lands. Madam Speaker, the school land was bought for Four Thousand British Pounds (4,000) from the Owoo family. I saw a photo copy of that colonial receipt dated 29th June 1922 when I visited the School, prior to writing this Statement...

New 4 year SHS system generate mix feelings

Some heads of Senior High Schools(SHS) in Cape Coast, on Thursday expressed concern that it would be difficult for them to admit new students for the 2010/2011 academic year due to lack of infrastructural facilities. Most of them maintained that although the four- year duration system being introduced this year for the SHS was good, the crux of the matter was that existing facilities was not enough to comfortably accommodate students already in school, let alone new entrants.
